The origins of engagement rings

Most of us have bought diamond engagement rings – I’ve bought two over the years and I don’t plan on buying another – but have you ever wondered how the tradition of buying engagement rings and wedding rings began?

Some historians claim that the giving of engagement rings dates back to the late medieval period, when there was a belief that there was a vein which ran straight from the third finger on the left hand to the heart. This is still the traditional finger on which to wear the engagement ring, although it has yet to be proved that the vein in question actually exists.

Have you ever wondered why there is the traditional waiting period between engagement and marriage? Once again, many historians agree on why this is the case, pointing to the tenure of Pope Innocent III, who in the 13th century ordered that there had to be gap between becoming engaged to getting married. There is no evidence as to why this papal decree was made, but it certainly seems to be the origins of the waiting period.

At this time, only the wealthiest people could afford to buy rings which contained precious stones and gold wedding rings. For the rest of the population, engagement rings and wedding rings would be made from whatever materials were available, with wood and hemp being used by those who were known as serfs or peasants.

Leaping forward several hundred years to the Victorian period, we see that the imagination of the ring makers really began to take off. They used precious stones, the first letter of which would spell out a message.
